As the social development arm of Cherry Mobile, Barangay Cherry Mobile aims to empower Filipinos by reaching out to communities who need support the most. It moves people to act on the most pressing challenges their localities our experiencing by sending petitions for support.
With the debut of Barangay Cherry Mobile last year, warmth from the smiles of people from all walks of life radiated. To highlight the program, 12 Gifts of Christmas was launched by giving Noche Buena gift packs to over 1,500 families at selected areas nationwide.
Early this year, Barangay Cherry Mobile helped address the issues on livelihood geared to combat poverty in one of the municipalities in Siargao islands.
Del Carmen is a 5th class municipality with twenty barangays and four island barangays located in Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte. The locality has a poverty incidence of 67.24% which means that the town is among the poorest in the country. Livelihood sources for most of the people in the island is agriculture and aquamarine but still lacking in latest technological knowledge to maximize output.
The Office of the Mayor requested for support for the livelihood program of Barangay Quezon, one of their poorest barangays. The barangay is located at the northern tip of the boundary of the municipal of Del Carmen, 20 kms from the poblacion. Access to the area is difficult due to the undeveloped roads and its mountainous location.
Barangay Cherry Mobile funded the initial capital worth 50,000php for the pineapple production livelihood program in Barangay Quezon. The fund covered for 30,000 seedlings for one hectare and organic fertilizer.
The seedlings were purchased in the locality of Siargao and planted in June 2012. After two months, the farmers of Brgy Quezon harvested the pineapples. The produced goods were sold during the fiesta at the cost of 10php to 20php per kilo.
The Barangay Cherry Mobile team salutes the farmers of Barangay Quezon for their hard work in the fruition of the pineapple production. The commendable efforts for the expansion of their livelihood project will always be an ace over poverty mitigation which we are all aiming for.
